Individual Diversity Competency

Alberta Health Services values diversity and is committed to becoming a diversity competent health organization. A diversity competent health organization is made up of diversity competent individuals. Diversity competency is the ability of not only health systems to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all diverse backgrounds in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the differences, similarities and worth of individuals, families and communities and also protects and preserves the dignity of each, but it is also the ability of individuals within the health system. This means that each and every employee, volunteer and Board Member has a personal responsibility to contribute to the diversity competency of Alberta Health Services.

Diversity competence is an essential component in providing effective and responsive services to diverse clients, families and communities. Assumptions about individual diversity competency include:

  • Diversity competence is a process, not an event
  • Diversity competence consists of five constructs: diversity awareness, diversity knowledge and sensitivity, diversity skill, diversity encounters, and diversity proficiency, diversity competency
  • There is a direct relationship between the level of competence of health care providers and their ability to provide diversity responsive health care services.

There are many tools and resources that can help you become more diversity competent. The best place to start is by completing the Online Diversity Competency Self-Assessments this will help you evaluate your own level of diversity competency and will link you to resources to help you to continue to develop our diversity competence. By all accounts, individuals who have completed the self assessments agree that they learned about diversity just by completing the self assessments.
