Diversity and Alberta Health Services

Alberta Health Services recognizes that the populations we serve are diverse and are becoming even more so as our population expands. We also understand that increasing the diversity competency of the health system, including recognizing and addressing health disparities and service access barriers and increasing employment opportunities for diverse individuals, will result in improved health outcomes for diverse populations. Increasing the diversity competency of the health system will also result in social, community, financial and service improvements.

To this end, Alberta Health Services is working towards developing a provincial approach to achieving diversity competency of our health organization. In the interim, the Regional Diversity Directional Document, vetted through the Regional Diversity Advisory Committee in Calgary, will be used to articulate the way in which Alberta Health Services will work to become a proficient diversity competent health organization, and a model to other health organizations. In detailing the integrated planning necessary to building diversity competence, the document highlights the way in which this planning will increase access, reduce barriers and improve health system experiences for diverse populations.

The directional document incorporates best and promising practices for achieving diversity competency and identifies how Alberta Health Services will contribute to the growing evidence base. It reflects current thinking about the importance of a more comprehensive view of diversity, continuing changing demographics of the populations served, an organizational approach to diversity and the emerging trends in diversity competency.

Currently there are business units and individual staff members dedicated to formal diversity roles that operationalize existing Diversity Programs and Services
