The Refugee Health and Wellbeing Project

The Refugee Health and Wellbeing project, initiated in 2007, is made possible through a generous donation to the Calgary HealthTrust’s Reach! program. It aims to positively impact the health of refugees through facilitating and strengthening collaborative partnerships to collectively identify ways of enhancing community capacity. A thorough review of the literature and an environmental scan identified promising practices that have enhanced the capacity of refugees to improve their health outcomes.

The Refugee Health and Wellbeing Project Coordinator leads the project and work in partnership with the Calgary Refugee Health Program, Calgary Catholic Immigration Society.

The Refugee Health and Wellbeing Diversity Liaisons provide coordination and liaison services to refugees seeking access health services in the Calgary Health Region. This is done by providing support and assistance to refugees though liaising and facilitating connections between refugee clients/patients, families, communities and Calgary Health Region staff as well as community organizations providing services to the refugee population in Calgary.

A research paper on promising practices, programs and approaches for improving the health of refugees from elsewhere in Canada and around the world; as well as, consultations with key informants in the Calgary community for feedback on which strategy, or strategies, identified in the literature review would be most appropriate and effective in assisting refugees, to recommend necessary actions to develop the strategies, and to identify those who would be able to collaborate on these or other new strategies. This report will be used as a guide to assist with the development of a made-in-Calgary strategy to improve the health and wellbeing of the refugee population.
