Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative Ltd.

Alberta Health Services - Capital Health has contracted the Multicultural Health Brokers Co-op since 1998 to provide perinatal health education and support for immigrant and refugee communities in Edmonton and surrounding areas. The services provided by the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative Ltd. for Capital Health include:

  • delivering pre-natal education in different languages,
  • helping pregnant immigrant women and their families access health and relevant resources to promote healthy pregnancy and delivery; and
  • developing linguistically accessible health education materials.

Multicultural Health Brokers provide health education and early parenting support to women and families from immigrant communities in Edmonton. Their mandate is:

to support immigrant and refugee individuals and families in attaining optimal health through relevant health education, community development and advocacy.

They provide liaison, referral and information between newcomers and the health system. Specifically, they provide:

  • prenatal education and hospital tours,
  • post-natal support,
  • health and sexuality education,
  • telephone counselling and referrals,
  • home visits when necessary,
  • translation and resource material development, community development, and
  • health promotion, and consultation concerning cross-cultural issues.

They also serve as health brokers between health institutions and immigrant communities.

Referrals are required.
