Other Diversity Programs and Services in Calgary

Many existing programs, services and initiatives have worked with Healthy Diverse Populations to integrate principles of diversity to ensure they are more accessible to diverse individuals and families. Some of these programs, services and initiatives are:

East Calgary Health Services Initiative

While the unique health needs of the population living in East Calgary have been recognized for some time, the Health of the Region 2005 Report identified specific health disparities between community groups in the Calgary Health Region. In response to this disparity, the Calgary Health Region initiated the East Calgary Health Services Initiative to determine and implement strategies that would focus on improving the health status of vulnerable communities living in the East Calgary catchment area. The geographical boundaries of East Calgary catchment area are:

  • North – McKnight Boulevard
  • South – Ogden Road
  • East – city limits
  • West – Barlow Trail

East Calgary Health Centre

A new community health centre is planned for the residents of East Calgary. Several diversity initiatives were identified as immediate priorities for the East Calgary Health Centre.

Best Beginning

Best Beginning is a prenatal program offered to pregnant women with a low income and for pregnant teens. The program aims to reduce the incidence of low birth weight babies and to give babies a better beginning in life. It also helps families access services and provides childbirth preparation information in first language and with special cultural emphasis. The program involves group education, discussion, and support through individual contact with a nurse, nutritionist and social worker. Best Beginning also uses alternate education strategies to deliver prenatal information and childbirth preparation (in first language) in community locations (homes, temples, mosques, community agencies and resource centres) and in culturally sensitive ways.
