Language Services

    Oral Interpretation

Trained interpreters are provided to improve the communication between health care professionals and patients/families

  • Interpreters could be requested by patient and family or by the staff.
  • The interpreters are hired through Centralized Interpretation Services; a subsidiary of Family Centre in Edmonton.
  • Interpreters are available 7 days a week during the day and evenings provided booking is done between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm weekdays.

    Documents Translation

  • Professional translation of the medical transcripts and patient education material is facilitated on request by the various programs.

Cultural Awareness Education for Staff

    Cultural awareness education provides:

  • Hospital wide in-service session
  • On request by individual program areas on their units tailored to the specific program need
  • Once a year Health and Culture Fair; Poster display of diverse cultural community’s Profiles and etc.
  • Celebration of some cultural events; Chinese New Year celebration.

    Cultural Consultation

  • Cultural consultation is provided on request by health care team members for clarifying the presenting issues or concerns due to cultural differences.

Cultural Competency Training

  • Cultural competency training is provided for the health care professionals twice a year as part of staff development through Human Resources; Staff Development.
  • At the end of one full day session the participants receive a certificate of completion.

Community Liaison

  • Connect health care professionals to ethnic community resources for providing support to the patients in the community.

Research and Education

  • Support research and development of immigrant and refugee health to impact policy change towards inclusion of diversity in health planning
  • Provide information on immigrant refugee health for education and research, and connect researchers to the ethnic communities to learn their health needs and seek their input.

  • Cultural profiles of several ethnic communities are available through Multicultural Program.
